The 1st Annual “Can Creation” will kick-off February as National Canned Food Month. Businesses are invited to participate by creating a canned food sculpture in the Chico Mall with entries donated after display and judging to help ease hunger. On Sunday, Feb. 7 businesses will build their canned food structure between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Community members are encouraged to vote for their favorite design throughout the following two-week period. On Feb. 19 the community favorite will win the People’s Choice Award, with other awards for the Most Original, Healthiest Meal and sculpture with the most cans. All entries will then go to the North Valley Community Food Bank, a program of the Community Action Agency of Butte County, Inc.

Can Creation is held to raise awareness to residents regarding the need for donating food year-round. The Network for a Healthy California—Sierra Cascade Region is working to encourage businesses to donate healthy food items. Donating healthy foods helps ensure that residents have the chance to live healthy lifestyles. Everyday 60,000 low-income people in Butte County face the pain of hunger. The North Valley Community Food Bank provides emergency services to Butte, Glenn, Colusa, Plumas and Sierra Counties.
